Common Trigger Mistakes
|
Helpful Tip:
The most common mistake made in entering triggers is misspelling. TriggerNews matches on
the exact words entered as triggers. We highly recommend that once all your triggers have
been entered, from within the Triggers tab, click on the Export Data to Spreadsheet button,
assign a file name and location for the file and hit Okay. After the file is saved, invoke
it and run the Spell Checker (F7 key) from within Excel to check that there are no typing
mistakes. You can then edit and correct any triggers that are flagged.

Incomplete Company Specification
Many TriggerNews source data feeds include company symbol information. If a trigger definition
includes a company symbol, this symbol is checked against those associated with the scanned
article. Sometimes, a company is mentioned in an article, but the name of the company does
not appear in the headline. If the source provider includes the symbol for the referenced
company, that symbol is also compared with triggers that define company symbols.
If a company is publicly traded, and thus has a symbol, it is important to include that symbol
in the trigger definition to ensure you receive all relevant articles.

As mentioned above, many TriggerNews source data feeds include company symbol information.
For sources where the company information is not provided, the company symbol is not
used for matching. It is important to include the name of a company to ensure you
receive all relevant articles.

Overly-Restrictive Trigger Definition
If a trigger definition contains both company information and a trigger phrase,
a match occurs only if 1) the company is associated with the article (by either company
symbol or company name) and 2) the trigger phrase is contained in
the article title.
| RESTRICTIVE
|
| Company Name | Company Symbol | Trigger Phrase |
| Microsoft | MSFT | Database |
|
This trigger will only match articles that are about Microsoft and
contain the word database in their title. This trigger will not match
general articles about Microsoft nor will it match general articles containing
the word database. Therefore, the number of alerts will be small.
In order to match general articles about Microsoft as well as general articles
containing the word database, it is necessary to define two separate
triggers, as shown below.
| GENERAL
|
| Company Name | Company Symbol | Trigger Phrase |
| Microsoft | MSFT | |

Incorrect Placement of Trigger Phrase
The symbol field of a trigger is only compared to the symbol information associated
with articles. It is not compared with the title of the article. If a general word
is entered as a company symbol, it is not likely to match any article.
